One of the most common questions we get at STARS Overland is: How do I start overlanding? If you’re curious about this adventurous lifestyle, you’re in the right place.
WHAT IS OVERLANDING?
Overlanding is self-reliant adventure travel to remote destinations where the journey itself is the main goal. It’s usually done with off-road capable vehicles (from bicycles to trucks), with camping as the primary form of lodging. Trips often last weeks, months, or even years, and can cross international borders.
If you want to dig deeper into the definition, check out our previous blog post on the topic: Understanding Overlanding: The Fundamentals
THE 10-DAY RULE
At STARS Overland, we believe that if you can master a 10-day trip, you can handle any length of overland travel. Long journeys are really just a series of 10-day cycles. If you can plan, pack, and execute a 10-day adventure, you’re ready for anything.
CORE OVERLANDING SKILLS
1. Problem Solving
Overlanding is full of surprises—mechanical issues, language barriers, road closures, and more. A curious mind and a problem-solving attitude are essential. If you enjoy tackling challenges, you’ll thrive on the road.
2. Vehicle Preparation
Long-term overlanders focus on reliability and simplicity. Preventative maintenance, robust systems, and carrying only what’s necessary are key. The longer the trip, the more important it is to know your vehicle inside and out.
If your preventative maintenance is done right, it would likely save you time and money! Check our guide more support: Stars Overland’s Essential Vehicle Maintenance Guide.
3. Skill Set Development
Consider upgrading your skills—mechanical know-how, first aid, and even language classes can make a big difference. Administrative prep (like paperwork for border crossings and insurance) is also crucial for international travel.

4. Budgeting & Security
Long-term travel requires financial planning and daily budgeting. Security is also important: think about safe campsites, secure storage, and vehicle upgrades like lock boxes or tinted windows.

CAMPING: START SMALL, BUILD UP
-
Begin with a weekend trip. Pack basic shelter, food, and gear. Don’t stress if you don’t have something—you can check our camping accessories here.
-
After each trip, refine your packing list. Note what you used and what you didn’t.
-
Work up to a 10-day trip. Add essentials like a fridge, tire repair kit, and air compressor. Tire issues are the most common problem on long trips.
-
After a 10-day trip, you’ll have the experience to tackle longer adventures.
DRIVING: USE WHAT YOU HAVE
The best overland vehicle is often the one you already own. Make sure it’s mechanically sound and load it up with your camping gear. Secure everything—loose items can become dangerous in a sudden stop.
For longer or more technical trips, bring Recovery Gear (tow strap, basic tools, etc.) and know how to handle basic repairs, especially tire changes.
NAVIGATION: ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP
-
Know your route and local resources (fuel, hospitals, groceries).
-
Use multiple navigation tools: a phone with maps, a dedicated GPS, and a paper map and compass. If one fails, you have backups.
-
Learn basic navigation skills from others or through online courses (YouTube, etc.)
