SNORKEL : WHAT IS IT FOR?

SNORKEL : WHAT IS IT FOR?

Few upgrades make your rig look as rugged and trail-ready as asnorkel—also known as a raised air intake. While it adds serious expedition style, a snorkel is far more than just a visual statement. It’s a functional, protective modification that can significantly improve your vehicle’s performance and durability in harsh environments.

In this post, we’ll explore the benefits of installing a snorkel on your 4x4 and how it works.

WHAT DOES A SNORKEL DO?

The primary purpose of a snorkel is to provide your engine with clean, dry air. Most factory air intakes are located in the wheel well, where they’re vulnerable to water, dust, and debris. A snorkel relocates the intake to a higher position—usually near the windshield—reducing the risk of water ingestion during river crossings and minimizing dust intake on dry, dusty trails.

Think of it like a swimming snorkel: by raising the air intake, your engine “breathes” cleaner air from above the vehicle.

SNORKELS & WATER CROSSINGS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

While a snorkel helps protect your engine during off-road water crossings, it doesn’t make your vehicle amphibious. Manufacturers set wading depths based on multiple factors, including cabin sealing and vulnerable electrical components. If you’ve installed alift kitor upgraded to larger tires, your approach to water crossings may change—but a snorkel alone doesn’t guarantee waterproofing.

Pro Tip: Always extend your differential breathersand protect electrical systems when planning deep water crossings.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SNORKEL FOR YOUR VEHICLE

Fitment is key. We recommend choosing a snorkel designed specifically for your make and model to ensure a tight, leak-free seal. We’ve had excellent results with ARB Safari Snorkels, which we’ve installed on nearly every STARS Overland build.

If you already have the Snorkel and you are not equipped with the right tools, STARS Overland can handle the installation professionally for you – BOOK NOW BUTTON.

FINAL THOUGHTS: IS A SNORKEL WORTH IT?

Absolutely. A properly installed snorkel can:

  • Improveengine performance by delivering cleaner air

  • Protect against water damage during crossings

  • Reduce dust intake in dry environments

  • Add a rugged aesthetic to your overland build
