Overlanding has become a buzzword in recent years, and for good reason. It’s more than just off-road travel—it’s a lifestyle, a mindset, and a journey. In this article, we’ll explore what overlanding really means, where it came from, and how it continues to evolve.  

A BRIEF HISTORY 

Overlanding originated in Australia, where it referred to driving livestock across vast distances to reach new grazing lands or markets. One of the most notable examples is Alfred Canning’s stock route, surveyed between 1906 and 1910, which stretched 1,500 km from Halls Creek to Wiluna. 

DEFINING OVERLANDING TODAY 

Overland Journal defines it as: 

Self-reliant adventure travel to remote destinations where the journey is the primary goal. It’s typically done with off-road capable vehicles (from bicycles to trucks), involves camping, and often spans international borders over extended periods—weeks, months, or even years. 

Now let’s make a quiz: ask yourself the following questions: 

  • Am I traveling remotely?
  • Am I experiencing a culture different from my own?
  • Am I exploring under-documented regions?
  • Am I self-supported for days, weeks, or longer? 

If you answered yes to most of these, you’re probably overlanding. 

WHAT OVERLANDING MEANS TO US 

At STARS Overland, overlanding is both a goal and a journey. Our early weekend trips across the United Arab Emirates laid the foundation for bigger adventures. Like any outdoor pursuit, overlanding requires a unique set of skills developed through experience. Can anyone do it? Absolutely. Weekend trips, car camping, and touring are great ways to build confidence and prepare for larger expeditions. 

Long-term travel teaches you to adapt, problem-solve, and grow—whether it’s learning a new language, navigating unfamiliar terrain, or sourcing vehicle parts in remote areas.
